Bermuda scholars celebrated at special reception
A special reception was held to honour four outstanding scholars who have been accepted into prestigious schools around the world.
The Bermuda students, who are to attend United World College schools, were celebrated at the Bermuda National Trust Museum of Verdmont on Tuesday.
The reception offered attendees the opportunity to learn more about the educational opportunities offered by the UWC movement.
The scholars are Fergus O’Connell, Taylor Herzog, Juliette Smatt and Gianna Pedro.
• Fergus O’Connell of Saltus Grammar School will attend UWC Maastricht, Netherlands.
• Taylor Herzog of Somersfield Academy will be attending UWC Costa Rica.
• Juliette Smatt of Westminster School before Warwick Academy will attend UWC Costa Rica.
• Gianna Pedro of Warwick Academy will attend UWC Mostar.
A spokeswoman for UWC said: “The UWC movement was conceived in the 1950s during the height of the Cold War, based on the idea that students aged 16 to 18 would be grounded in their culture but impressionable enough to learn from each other.
“UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
“At present, 1,500 students from over 120 countries attend 18 UWCs worldwide. UWC locations include Armenia, Costa Rica, China, Swaziland, Norway, India, the Netherlands, Wales and Canada.
“All UWCs combine a rigorous International Baccalaureate academic programme with significant community service and cultural exchange requirements.
“UWC Bermuda is incredibly proud of these four students and their achievements. Each of them embodies the values and spirit of the UWC movement and we are excited to see the impact they will make on the world.”
