New lawyer thanks her ‘pillars of strength’

Bright future: Yan-Xia Rogers is now an associate at law firm Carey Olsen (Photograph supplied)

A passion for helping others and a determination never to quit inspired Yan-Xia Rogers to chose a career in law.

Those qualities reaped rewards recently when Ms Rogers was Called to the Bar.

Ms Rogers, an associate at law firm Carey Olsen, was joined by family, friends and colleagues — her “pillars of strength” — during the ceremony before Larry Mussenden, the Chief Justice.

Ms Rogers told the gathering at a courtroom in the Dame Lois Browne-Evans building: "I always intended to pursue a career in law after being inspired by family members who were Called to the Bar before me, later realising I was drawn to the profession as an intellectually stimulating career path and due to my passion for helping others.

“My decision did not come as shock to many people, especially my parents, who taught me to never quit. I will for ever be indebted to them for their support."

Ms Rogers also thanked the Chief Justice and Justice Shade Subair Williams, who provided her with the opportunity to shadow them during high school and kick-start her legal career.

Five lawyers spoke in support of Ms Rogers’s application, including Carey Olsen partner Kyle Masters.

Mr Masters said: "I am proud to have moved Yan-Xia's application and to have witnessed this key moment in her legal career.

“Yan-Xia has been a joy to work alongside since she joined the firm earlier this year and undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of her at Carey Olsen."

The firm’s group managing partner in Bermuda, Michael Hanson, said: "Congratulations to Yan-Xia on reaching this significant milestone in her legal career.

“She has proven to be a valued and highly competent member of our corporate team and this achievement reflects her dedication to her legal practice."

Ms Rogers returned to Bermuda in January to specialise in corporate and commercial law, advising clients on a range of cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance matters.

She previously trained in insurance litigation in regulatory, corporate and product liability at Kennedys Law in London, and was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2023.
