Schools get high marks for taking environmental lead
More than 20 schools across the island have been recognised for their commitment to the environment through the Eco-Schools Bermuda programme.
A spokeswoman said Warwick Academy, West Pembroke Primary, the Bermuda High School for Girls, Harrington Sound Primary and Eco-Campus Bermuda College earned the programme’s top Green Flag Award for their work throughout the past year.
Facilitated by the Foundation for Environmental Education, Eco-Schools Bermuda collaborates with local schools to establish student-led eco-clubs dedicated to driving sustainable change. Bermuda is one of 73 countries that promotes the programme.
The spokeswoman added: “On the island, this programme spans all levels, from preschools and primary schools to Bermuda College, with public schools alone contributing to over 60 per cent of its engagement.
“Sustainability projects within the awarded schools encompassed a wide range of initiatives, such as improving school grounds, creating edible and pollinator gardens, reducing energy consumption and waste and litter minimisation.”
Winning schools’ projects included bug hotels, planting mangroves at Hungry Bay, organising a “trashion” show and creating a green Cup challenge.
Other schools that were recognised were gold level awardees Prospect Preschool, Purvis Primary and Chatmore International, green seed recipients CedarBridge Academy, Francis Patton Primary and The Berkeley Institute, as well as Paget Primary and West End Primary, which received participation awards.
The spokeswoman thanked the programme’s sponsors, which include the Bermuda National Trust, Beyond Plastic Bermuda, Sirius Point, Butterfield Bank and the XL Foundation.
