High school students can earn a certificate through a global accounting body after the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants joined the Ministry of Education as a learning partner.

A ministry spokeswoman said pupils in the accounting track of the public school system’s finance and insurance signature learning programme could earn a foundation-level qualification from ACCA.

The qualification, also known as Foundations in Accountancy, teaches students basic knowledge in accounting and how to build careers in business and finance.

ACCA, the global professional body for accountants, consists of 250,000 members and 526,000 future members across several industries in more than 180 countries and regions.

It signed on as a signature learning partner and is collaborating with the Department of Education, The Berkeley Institute, Chartered Professional Accountants of Bermuda and the Bermuda College to deliver the qualification, which will eventually be offered to all high-school graduates on the island.

Other signature learning partners include Paradise Mobile, Cambridge Beaches and BAC Group of Companies.

Diallo Rabain, the education minister, said the collaboration with ACCA marked “a significant advancement in our education system” and “not only enhances educational opportunities but also strengthens our local workforce, which in turn supports Bermuda’s economic growth”.

He added: “I look forward to witnessing the positive impact that this partnership will have on our students and in our community.”

The ministry spokeswoman said: “The Ministry of Education is committed to collaborations that empower students, enrich the workforce and foster the overall development of our community.

“The positive outcomes of this initiative are eagerly anticipated, promising a brighter future for Bermuda’s youth.”
