Author Ori has first book published aged just 7
As a keen fan of books from the age of 2, it is perhaps no surprise that Bermudian Ori Herbert would some day write one of her own.
What is surprising is that the Toronto resident has ticked that goal off her bucket list at just 7 years old.
Ori is now a published author after The Night Thieves — which is set in Bermuda — went into print this summer.
The young writer hopes that her debut effort will be the first in a series of Ori’s Adventures books.
This evening she will hold her first book signing at Long Story Short in St George.
Ori’s mother, Joanne Darrell Herbert, said her daughter was determined to celebrate her 7th birthday in May by spending the day penning a story for publication.
Mrs Darrell Herbert explained: “She would not be swayed. I don’t know where she got the idea to write a book, but two of her godparents are authors, so she’s familiar with the idea that people she knows write books.
“So on her 7th birthday, she sat down and this is the story that she came up with.
“I was taken aback at the ending of the book. Some of the values our family has are helpfulness and kindness, and that really translated into her book.
“She is a very quirky kid and has interesting and sometimes unusual ideas.”
Mrs Darrell Herbert said that, aged 2½, her daughter’s daycare teacher thought Ori had learnt to read.
She said: “We thought maybe Ori was just parroting us, but she was reading books that we had never read to her before — we were astounded.”
Ori was helped in putting the story together by book illustrator Karim Sigere.
Mrs Darrell Herbert said: “The stars aligned, and we happened to become friends with Karim, who has a daughter around the same age as Ori.
“Karim works with kids to help them to get their stories on to paper and in book form and he had all the experience with self publishing so he led us through the whole process.”
Ori’s father is Bermudian actor Daren Herbert, who has appeared in the award-winning Canadian television show Kim’s Convenience.
There will be 25 copies of The Night Thieves on sale at Long Story Short later today, but another 100 copies are being published and should be available at the store next month.
Ori will donate 20 per cent of sales revenue to The Reading Clinic.
Kristin White, owner of Long Story Short, is also donating to the clinic. In a Facebook post, she said: “We are so excited to host the book launch for The Night Thieves.
“There will be a reading, a sweet treat and books will be on sale for $25. In lieu of our shop collecting any money from these sales, $5 of each sale will be donated to Bermuda’s Reading Clinic.
“The books will continue to be on sale while inventory lasts at our store, with these proceeds donated to this important charity.”
The book signing will be held at Long Story Short on Water Street between 6pm and 7pm, when Ori will give a reading of her book.
Mrs Darrell Herbert said: “Although Ori has described feeling a bit nervous about meeting people, she says she’s looking forward to it.”
