The island’s community youth centres have won praise for developing “teamwork, innovation, and a love for learning” among young people.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, toured the three centres last month to meet students and staff.

She called on the Western Zone Community Centre, the Sammy Wilson Central Zone Community Centre and the Eastern Zone Community Centre to take part in activities ranging from dance to crafts.

Ms Furbert, who joined children in Olympic-style games, highlighted the value of programmes outside of regular school hours that supported children’s social, emotional and creative development.

She said the visits left her “deeply moved by the caring, committed, and dedicated staff who nurture our young people”.

Ms Furbert added: “The love I felt from the students I engaged with was heart-warming.”

Nadine Henry, the senior youth services and development officer, said: “The dedication and energy of both the children and the staff in our programmes is truly inspiring.

“It warms my heart every time to witness youth fully engaged in activities that not only entertain them but also contribute to their development.”

Ms Henry said the programmes offered by the Office of Youth Affairs “go beyond fun — they’re about nurturing skills that will benefit our youth in the future”.

She added: “I want to extend my sincere thanks to the parents and guardians for trusting us with their little ones, and to our incredible staff for their love and commitment to supporting our youth.”

A government spokeswoman said the summer was "a season of celebration for Bermuda’s youth“ as the office made sure that young people were recognised for their contributions to the community.

She added: “From the successful collaboration during the National 18+ Youth Conference to the festivities on International Youth Day, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors has been at the forefront of highlighting the talents and achievements of Bermuda’s next generation.”

Ms Furbert added that “behind every thriving child, we often see very supportive parents”.

She said: “In our commitment to support parents and families, we proudly launched the Parenting Tips monthly series to offer encouragement and advice as they navigate the challenges of daily life so they can be the best versions of themselves for themselves and their families.

“The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors remains focused on its mission to build a better and fairer Bermuda for all families.

“The work being done at our community youth centres is a testament to this commitment, providing our children and parents with the tools they need to grow, thrive and contribute positively to Bermuda’s future."
