Students invited to tackle new debate challenge
A new initiative aimed at encouraging public school students to take part in public speaking and debate is to launch this year.
The Minister’s Debate Challenge, sponsored by the Minister of Education and managed by the Mirrors Programme and Dynamic Debaters and Learners, is expected to launch its first training sessions next month.
Diallo Rabain, the education minister, said: “Debate is a powerful tool for developing critical thinking, communication and leadership skills, especially among young people.
“I am committed to providing opportunities for students aged 10 to 14 to engage in debate, as it helps them think critically, consider diverse perspectives and confidently articulate their ideas.
“These are essential skills for success both in school and life.”
Gladstone Thompson, an organiser of the challenge, said that the training would broaden students’ ability to express their ideas and analyse different viewpoints, helping them become future leaders.
He added: “We commend this proactive initiative to give every student the tools to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society.
“We believe that the Minister's Debate Challenge can be a significant part of this journey.
“We are looking for public school students who are passionate about sharing their opinions, enjoy discussing important issues, and are ready to develop their critical thinking and leadership skills.
“If you're a first-time debater, this programme is perfect. No prior experience is needed — we'll teach you everything you need to know.”
The challenge is open to public school students between the ages of 10 and 14 who are willing to commit to weekly practice sessions starting on October 14 and continuing until March 16, 2025.
Top-ranked students will be eligible to receive special awards, while the two winning debate teams will get to travel overseas for a “special debate experience”.
Pupils interested in taking part must apply before October 3 through forms available at forms.gov.bm/Minister-Debate-Challenge.
