An event celebrating literacy and creativity in children is taking place next month.

The Annual Children’s Reading Festival, hosted by the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, is aimed at youngsters aged 14 and under including infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

The festival will be held on November 2, at Victoria Park, Hamilton, from 11am to 4pm.

All children will receive a free book, drink, popcorn and backpack, and family members are invited to join them in a day filled with activities encouraging a love for reading.

The event also aims to inspire imagination and creativity through fine arts, and will provide access to resources for parents.

Organisers have expanded the festival's activities to include children with support needs, by adding a sign language interpreter, sensory-friendly zones equipped with adaptive toys and volunteers to provide assistance.

Shawnette Smith, the president of the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, said: “The Children’s Reading Festival is not just an event — in its 25th year, it has become a vital part of our community’s fabric and a reflection of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's commitment to educational development.

“We are laying the groundwork for their future success by empowering our children through literacy.

“We believe that every child has the potential to shine and that reading opens the door to limitless possibilities.”
