Leading youth charity marks 20 years of success
A youth charity devoted to empowering young Bermudians, now marking 20 years in operation, is hosting a fundraising trek on December 1 to further its work.
Raleigh International Bermuda was founded in 2004 by lawyer Michael Spurling to provide young people with opportunities to take part in overseas volunteer work and self-development projects.
Two decades on, Raleigh offers two core programmes, with the Brave Programme for youths aged 14 to 17 and the Venturer Programmes catering to young adults aged 17 to 24.
Raleigh provides after-school programmes, summer camps, training camps and treks where participants learn survival skills, critical-thinking skills and take part in team-building exercises.
Venturers go on a ten-week overseas expedition to Costa Rica, South Africa, Kenya or Malaysia.
Throughout, participants learn to build on the three pillars of Raleigh: environment, adventure and community.
Dany de Rodríguez, the charity’s executive director, said there is “a definite need in Bermuda now more than ever to support our youths, especially as they transition into adulthood”.
She said young adults faced “many more challenges” than decades ago and added: “Teaching them skills they can use to make positive decisions as young adults will help them thrive in their life’s journey and avoid toxic environments and relationships.”
Krista Maria Looby, a Raleigh alumnus, said the programme left an enduring positive impact on her life.
“The welcoming and supportive atmosphere I receive from alumni in Bermuda and past participants I've met in other countries is still ongoing,” she added.
“My teamwork and leadership skills learnt from the Venturer programme is still in use to this day, assisting my everyday challenges and daily work interactions.
“I can always reach out to Raleigh both in times of crisis and if I need normal life advice.”
Ms Looby said Raleigh’s educational workshops and outdoor survival activities throughout the year were “a huge benefit in terms of independent learning”.
The charity’s trek on December 1 will begin at 9am at Dockyard.
The seven-mile walk, which finishes at Whale Bay, comes with “three exciting survival skill challenges”, with registration online at runsignup.com/raleighbermuda.
