Inmates celebrate academic success
Two inmates of the Westgate Correctional Facility have successfully earned their high school equivalency certificates.
Shae-Unni Smith and Tyshaun Brown were celebrated for their achievements at a recent graduation ceremony.
Mr Smith overcame challenges while studying under the Penn Foster programme at the Department of Corrections from July last year.
He transferred credits from his time at The Berkeley Institute and completed 49 lessons, dedicating 12 to 14 hours of study each week.
Mr Brown participated in the GED programme, where he studied mathematics, science, language arts and social studies.
He too studied for 12 to 14 hours weekly and passed each exam on his first attempt.
He was deemed a consistent student, emerging as a leader by encouraging others and recruiting new students.
Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, who attended the graduation, praised the two for their dedication and resilience.
She said: “Your accomplishments today are a testament to your intelligence and courage, commitment and strength.
“This achievement is no small feat — it's a powerful step towards a brighter, more fulfilling future for everyone in your life.”
Ms Wilkerson added: “Continue believing in your potential and using the tools you've earned here to build a positive, productive life.”
Keeva Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, said: “We are immensely proud of Shae-Unni Smith and Tyshaun Brown for their dedication and hard work.
“Their achievements highlight the positive impact of our educational programmes and the commitment of our staff to support rehabilitation efforts.”
