BHS students sell handmade items for education charity
Pupils at Bermuda High School have raised hundreds of dollars for charity by selling jewellery and keychains designed by themselves.
A spokeswoman said the school’s Creative Stars club raised more than $360 for Guatemalan-based education charity Dreams and Hopes through selling the handmade products to the student body and wider school community.
With guidance from creative design teacher Jodie Walters, the 12-member club first offered the items at the BHS Hallowe’en fair and sold out of their inventory within three weeks.
The group is crafting more products to sell at the school holiday bazaar on November 30.
Ms Walters said: “The mission of the Creative Stars is to use the skills that they are learning in school, and the tools and equipment we have in the Renaissance Re creation and innovation space, to raise enough money to sponsor the education of a student in Guatemala.
“This year, we set a goal to raise $360, which is the amount needed to provide a middle school student with a scholarship, including enrolment fees, tuition, school supplies, tutoring, computer lab access and healthcare.
“I am ecstatic to say that we have surpassed this goal and are on our way to raising enough money to provide a second scholarship.”
Carol Swainson, the head of school, added: “As a Round Square school, we are committed to taking action to help and understand those in different circumstances.
“It’s very special that our students are contributing to a community in Guatemala, sharing the gift of education with their peers around the world.”
A group of BHS students will travel to Guatemala in March for a service project.
