Philanthropist donates cash trove in wife’s memory
A scholarships non-profit has been boosted $100,000 by a donor honouring his late wife.
Knowledge Quest, a non-governmental organisation, is one of several groups that philanthropist Jimmy Mayer aided in memory of his wife, Becky.
Mr Mayer said that he hoped his donation would not only honour her legacy, but raise awareness about the importance of Knowledge Quest.
He added: “Knowledge Quest deserves far more recognition for the vital role it plays in shaping the future of young Bermudians.
“I hope my support inspires others to step forward and contribute to this impactful organisation.”
Knowledge Quest, which provides needs-based scholarships to Bermudian students, described the Mayers as “celebrated advocates for education and medical research”.
The pair championed several local and international causes during their 50 years of marriage.
Mr Mayer has made further contributions to organisations that his wife, who died in May, cared about.
Iva Taylor, the director of Knowledge Quest and former scholarship recipient of the organisation, thanked Mr Mayer for his donation.
She said: “This year, we saw an unprecedented 160 applications, highlighting the growing need for financial assistance among Bermudian students.
“His donation will be life-changing for many aspiring scholars.”
Knowledge Quest has given scholarships to more than 300 applicants since its inception in 2002.
The group steps in to assist Bermudians in need when all other funding avenues have been exhausted.
