Bermuda College ramps up cybersecurity after breaches

Bermuda College has implemented “advanced cybersecurity measures” through upgrades to its critical software systems.

In its 2023-24 annual report, the college said it expanded its information technology team to provide a more secure and efficient IT infrastructure.

The college also highlighted work to make its facilities more welcoming.

The details came after several breaches of the college’s IT systems this year, including an attack in February that resulted in its systems being disrupted, affecting internet, website, internal portals and webmail services.

The report, which was tabled on Friday in the House of Assembly, referred to another incident in March which it said highlighted the importance of continuing vigilance and investment in its security protocols.

The college said it implemented a multi-factor authentication system for both Citrix and Moodle software systems access.

For another upgrade, the college said its IT staff and partners were able to view real-time security data, track and analyse events, and maintain security data logs for auditing and compliance purposes.

The college said the 2023-24 academic year had been “one of significant progress and challenges for the Information Technology Services Department”.

“Looking forward, ITS remains committed to enhancing the technological capabilities of Bermuda College, and ensuring a secure and robust environment for learning and operations.

“Continuous improvement and adaptation to the evolving digital landscape will be pivotal in supporting the college’s mission to provide quality education and services to all stakeholders.”

The college said by focusing on its strategic priorities, its IT services would continue as a cornerstone of the institution’s success, driving “innovation and excellence in all aspects of campus life”.

In other highlights, the college took steps over the past academic year to improve its library services, which included creating more space for students.

In response to a library survey aimed at meeting the evolving needs of clients, and to evoke a more welcoming atmosphere for study space and “chill” areas, the college created three new lounge spaces, with support from the law firm Appleby.

The institution also partnered with the Bermuda Coffee Company to open a café in the foyer and steps were taken to create new dedicated public computer spaces for casual public walk-ins.

The college said the library space was chosen for filming by Method Media Bermuda, and by the Ministry of Education as a “cosy backdrop” for livestreamed round table discussions.

“These events indicate new potential for the space for similar activities and events,” the college added.
