Next BHS head of primary ready to prepare pupils for success
A teacher with more than 20 years of experience will become Head of Primary at the Bermuda High School from next August, it was announced this morning.
Nichola Cunha will take over from Tracy Renaud, who will retire from the BHS at the end of the 2024-25 year after ten years.
The school said that Ms Cunha had degrees from Mount Allison University and St Thomas University, both in New Brunswick, as well as from Mount St Vincent University in Nova Scotia
It added: “Mrs Cunha has over 20 years of experience in education as a teacher and in various leadership positions: six years at Harrington Sound Primary, eight years at Saltus Grammar School and nine years at BHS.
“Mrs Cunha has taught from Year 4 to Year 6 and has served as mathematics and numeracy co-ordinator, year level leader and booster camp supervisor.”
Ms Cunha said: “My top priority is ensuring our students' success and equipping them to step confidently into the challenges of the evolving global landscape.
“The staff’s commitment to excellence continues to raise the bar and the achievements of our many accomplished alumni stand as a testament to this dedication.
“It has been a true privilege to experience the strong culture that defines BHS, and I eagerly look forward to contributing to the next exciting chapter in its journey.”
Ms Renaud taught Year 6 and served as an assessment co-ordinator before she became Head of Primary in 2018.
She said it was “an absolute privilege” to have held the role.
Ms Renaud added: “I will deeply miss the students, staff and our wonderful families.
“During the past 15 years, I have had the honour of working closely with Mrs Cunha, watching her grow and excel in various leadership roles.
“I have no doubt that the primary department is in exceptionally capable hands, and I look forward to collaborating with Mrs Cunha in the coming two terms to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.”
Carol Swainson, the Head of School, said: “Mrs Renaud has been an extraordinary community builder who has not only strengthened the teaching and learning in primary but has fostered a culture of kindness and care among the students, staff and families.
“She will be greatly missed by everyone at BHS.”
She added: “Mrs Cunha’s experience speaks for itself; she has been a force in the classroom and a leader in the primary department.
“We are thrilled to promote her to this role, knowing that she will build on the solid foundation laid by her predecessors.”
