Charity breakfast initiative held at Elliot Primary
A community action group kicked-off a month-long breakfast initiative yesterday to cater for pupils of a school in Devonshire.
The breakfast day event was held at Elliot Primary School and will continue weekly this term, Aaron Critchlow, a cofounder of Bermuda Is Love said.
The meal included pancakes, potatoes, muffins and fruit. Different menus are planned for each week.
The event is part of a series of activities the charity is organising designed to reintroduce its mission and vision to the public, while also addressing the principles that guide its work.
Mr Crichlow said the charity would provide breakfast to all 110 pupils of the school every Wednesday between 8am and 9am.
He said: “It is to ensure that all children have access to a healthy, sustainable, hearty meal before their classes.
“The purpose of Bermuda Is Love is that we advocate for the right to food and this programme is part of that, to ensure that all people, including children, have access to a healthy meal.
“It also protects against food insecurity, against hunger and ensures the children have a healthy start to the day.”
Mr Crichlow said the feeding programme was an aspect of the wider scope of the charity, which is to ensure food security throughout the island.
He said the move was a pilot project and a precursor to the charity’s ultimate goal of providing food to students of all public schools on the island.
Mr Crichlow added: “Our goal is to have that done by 2030 but this is our pilot run and it is to get more volunteers involved, more awareness involved and to get support from other organisations in Bermuda.”
Kimberly Creighton, the principal at Elliot Primary, welcomed the initiative.
She added: “If the children are going to have a great day, they need to start with a great breakfast.”
Ms Creighton said the pupils appreciated the initiative and enjoyed having breakfast with their peers.
She said: “There is also the social aspect to it so that is beneficial as well.”
