IB programme at Somersfield Academy hits 20-year milestone
Somersfield Academy is celebrating 20 years of offering the International Baccalaureate to its students and said it is leading the way in shaping “globally minded leaders”.
To mark the occasion, the school hosted its first alumni speaker’s panel on Monday, when students and teachers past and present reflected on the lasting impact of the curriculum.
The event was moderated by former teacher Jason Hammer and included Somersfield alumni Ayetoro Hinds, Hana Bushara, Sion Symonds, Hannah Horsfield, Georgia Harris and Maya Rajeh.
Riki Teteina, the head of school, said the IB programme was integral to Somersfield’s mission of inspiring socially conscious, independent thinkers.
He added: “We’re incredibly proud of the students who have thrived under this internationally recognised curriculum and the teachers who have made this journey possible."
As the only school on the island to offer the IB middle years programme, Somersfield Academy said it provided a holistic learning experience that challenged students to think critically and act responsibly.
Charlie Judd, the head of secondary, added: “The IB middle years programme not only prepares our students academically but also equips them with essential life skills.
“By exploring real-world connections, we have students who are not only knowledgeable but also inspired to make meaningful impacts in their local and global communities."
Cathy Schlei, the school’s IB curriculum co-ordinator, said the middle years programme nurtured students’ curiosity and passion for learning.
“Its focus on diverse cultures and perspectives inspires creativity and helps students develop into informed, compassionate global citizens,” she explained.
“Moreover, research shows that middle year programme students are better prepared for success in the IB diploma programme," she said.
On January 31 and February 2, students of the middle years programme will present Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR, reflecting the core values of Somersfield Academy, and on February 19 the school will host an open house from 5.30pm.
