Somersfield to hold exhibition of students’ study journeys
An exhibition demonstrating a range of diverse skills from bow-making to boat-building will be held at Somersfield Academy next month.
The show is the culmination of months of study by M5 students, who were asked to select topics they were interested in but knew little about.
The event, open to parents, mentors, invited guests and potential students, will serve as a platform for pupils to showcase their work, engage with the community, and discuss their projects with attendees.
It will also provide an open-house opportunity for prospective students and parents to learn more about the school.
Pupils who completed the personal project programme include: Thomas Garnier, who made a video showcasing a variety of Bermuda's plants and flowers; Rocco Adderley, who turned old coins into jewellery; Kieran Foster, who learnt to scuba dive, making a documentary about his progress; Dezirae Darrell, who learnt how to make cello bows; Isaac Davis, who learnt skills necessary to restore a boat; and Aurelie Adjalla, who mastered basic crochet techniques to create durable, reusable grocery bags.
Julie Yoon, the project co-ordinator, said that the work highlighted the students’ initiative and discipline.
She said: “Watching our M5 students take ownership of their learning and transform their ideas into real-world projects has been incredibly rewarding.
“The personal project exhibition is a celebration of their growth, creativity and determination, and I am excited for our community to experience the passion and innovation they’ve demonstrated throughout this journey.
“As Bermuda’s only school offering the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, Somersfield continues to champion inquiry-based learning and skill development.
“This exhibition exemplifies the school’s mission to inspire socially conscious, independent thinkers.”
Charlie Judd, the head of secondary, added: “The M5 Personal Project Exhibition is a testament to our students' ability to pursue their passions and transform their ideas into tangible achievements.”
The show will be held at the school’s gymnasium on February 19 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
