Last-ditch effort to save ‘esteemed’ school
A petition has been launched to save Gilbert Institute from closure.
The change.org poll posted on Monday by “concerned Gilbert parents” has attracted 244 signatures, with a goal of reaching 500.
The primary school is slated for closure in June and David Burt, the Premier, this week announced that it was to be converted into a seniors home.
The creator of the petition wrote: “We, who deeply value the role of education in shaping a brighter future for our children, have been struck with concerns over the proposed closure of the Gilbert Institute.
“This esteemed establishment has served as the cornerstone of our children's education, propelling them towards success.
“Gilbert Institute has consistently demonstrated its value over the years, standing not just as a hall of learning but as a sanctuary that nurtures and educates future leaders of our society.”
It added: “Holding the profound belief that education is not merely about grades but about nurturing intellect, fostering critical thinking and developing leadership skills, Gilbert Institute has invariably proven itself as a pillar of our community.”
The petition said keeping the school’s doors open was “not just an option but a necessity”.
In May of last year, the Government reversed its decision to close St David’s Primary School and West End Primary School after an outcry from the community.
Those schools had also been slated for closure under the Government’s education reforms.
On announcing that the schools would remain open, Mr Burt said: “You spoke, we listened. An outcome that we feel is in the best interests of all of Bermuda’s students has been reached and agreed by the Cabinet.”
The move followed a rescoring process, integrating a history and legacy component that was not included in the original assessment of which schools would close.
Mr Burt said this week that architectural work would be carried out to remodel Gilbert Institute into a seniors’ home.
He added: “We look forward to having services that will be available either late this year or next year.”
The Ministry of Education has been approached for comment.
