Next Warwick Academy head of secondary announced
An educator with a wealth of experience working in the island’s education sector has been appointed to be head of secondary at Warwick Academy.
Rebeka Sousa will succeed Mark Thorpe and will assume her new role in September.
David Horan, the school’s principal, said Ms Sousa is a dedicated lifelong learner and an exceptional mathematics and physics teacher, who worked in private and public schools on the island.
Ms Sousa, the deputy head of Warwick Academy, said: “I am truly honoured and excited to take on the role of head of secondary.
“It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of the remarkable leaders who have shaped Warwick Academy into the unique and exceptional place it is today.”
She said the school feels like home and added: “I am deeply committed to its mission and community.
“My journey here, both as a teacher and as deputy head of curriculum, has been filled with invaluable experiences that have further solidified my dedication to this incredible school.
“I look forward to building on our strong foundation and working collaboratively with staff, students and families to continue driving our vision for excellence.”
Mr Horan said Ms Sousa has led significant changes at Warwick Academy, including the redesign of the school’s key stage three assessment as well as managing scheduling and subject staffing.
Beyond the classroom, Ms Sousa coaches volleyball and serves as a mathematics specialist consultant and instructional coach at Inspire Math.
She has served as president of the Bermuda Council of Teachers of Mathematics for the past seven years and previously served on the Bermuda Educators Council.
Mr Horan said Ms Sousa brought a leadership skill set suited for her new role, along with a deep passion for Warwick Academy.
He added: “Her vision presentation demonstrated a thorough understanding of our institution, effectively translating her achievements as deputy head into her new position and identifying future growth opportunities.”
