Workshop explores Bermuda’s rich history

Think like a historian: the professional development workshop will focus on the National Museum of Bermuda's teacher resource guide (Image supplied)

Teachers can attend a free professional development workshop with strategies to bring historical narratives to life.

The National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard will host the event on March 8 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

It centres on the museum’s teacher resource guide — Freedom Narratives: Mary Prince, Benjamin Benson and the Abolition of Slavery.

The workshop is titled Historical Thinking and Enquiry Based Learning Techniques.

The interactive two-hour session will explore “thinking like a historian”, to foster critical thinking, encouraging students to analyse evidence, consider multiple perspectives and develop historical inquiry skills.

The workshop is part of the NMB professional development programme titled Moving the Needle, sponsored by Centennial Bermuda Foundation.

The NMB said the programme, approved by the Department of Education, would help teachers to explore, refine and unpack their understanding of Bermuda’s rich history, enabling them to experiment with multidisciplinary teaching approaches.

Participants will be provided with historical research, primary historical sources, and practical classroom activities.

They will work directly with the museum’s teacher resource guide, which explores the rise of the United States cotton industry and the experiences of Black Bermudians in the US during the era of slavery.

Lisa Howie, an educator who holds 25 years of education and community engagement experience, will host the workshop.

Ms Howie, who is also an art adviser, cultural entrepreneur, educator and writer, said: “Learning is a lifelong endeavour. The upcoming teacher development programme explores new strategies to enrich the learning experience.

“This approach to history includes storytelling and context-building using methods of inquiry, discussion and evaluation.

“It’s practical and interesting and we hope it proves valuable to all who participate.”

The event caters for a maximum of 30 attendees and the registration deadline is March 4.
