Special school’s staff issue now a police matter
The Bermuda Police Service are investigating matters involving some staff members at a school for children with special needs.
The Royal Gazette first asked the Department of Child and Family Services on January 22 about investigations into staff at Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy.
A spokeswoman for the DCFS this week responded: “The investigation into this matter is being conducted by the Bermuda Police Service. Accordingly, any inquiries should be directed to them.”
The BPS said they “do not comment on ongoing investigations”.
Neither the BPS nor the DCFS would confirm what matters were being investigated.
Last month, the Government apologised to parents for not providing them with a timely opportunity to meet substitute teachers drafted in amid staff shortages at the academy.
The Department of Education said the school told parents in December that there were staff shortages and that some staff were “on leave”.
School resumed after the winter break for public school students and staff on January 6.
It was not until January 20 that parents were introduced to the substitutes by way of a virtual PTA meeting.
Asked the reasons for the staff shortages, what staff and how many were on leave, the spokeswoman said at the time: “While personnel matters remain confidential and cannot be publicly discussed, the department has taken steps to maintain the quality of education and care for every student.”
