Chess seminar aims to bring the game into schools
Educators can learn how to use chess as a tool to help their pupils become better learners during a three-day seminar next week.
The Bermuda Chess Association will host Chess in Education — Preparation of Teachers to promote the game for use inside the classroom and around the school.
Jerry Nash, the US chairman of Chess in Education for the International Chess Federation, will arrive on the island to oversee the seminar.
Mark Flanagan, a member of the Bermuda Chess Association, said: “As a father of three boys, with chess a huge part of their learning development and subsequent success, I have seen first-hand the importance of chess as a developmental tool.
“[Chess is] something that is not readily included in curriculums that are often focused on content rather than practical application in a workplace.
“We are hoping that the Chess in Education seminar will help to bridge this gap.”
Mr Nash has been foundational in helping to promote chess as a learning tool, after using the game in his own classrooms when he was a teacher and noticing a dramatic improvement in critical thinking skills.
A spokesman for the Bermuda Chess Association said that the seminar will feature 27 attendees across 16 primary and middle schools.
Teachers have also had the chance to learn chess with the association’s Tuesday lessons.
The seminar will take place between March 3 and 5 at AXA XL’s O’Hara House on Bermudiana Road in Hamilton.
