Teen pilot talks to Premier about aviation scholarships

Dreams take flight: David Burt, the Premier, speaks with Remy Donowa, a 17-year-old Bermudian pilot (Photograph supplied)

A teenager who has become one of the youngest Bermudians to earn a private pilot’s licence recently met with the Premier who praised him for his accomplishment.

Remy Donowa, 17, earned his licence last summer just 18 days after his birthday and is expected to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida this autumn to study aeronautical science.

David Burt invited Mr Donowa to the Cabinet Office, where they were joined by Lawrence Scott, a government MP and chairman of the Bermuda Airport Authority.

Mr Burt congratulated him on the accomplishment, adding: “I look forward to him taking me up in a plane one day.”

A spokeswoman said Mr Donawa used their meeting to highlight the need for the government to expand scholarships for Bermudians pursuing careers in aviation.

The Warwick Academy student said the increased support would bring more young Bermudians into the field.

Mr Scott said that the authority was exploring ways to enhance support for Bermudians in aviation.
