Point of order: students excel on debate stage
A group of young debaters tested their mettle this weekend in the finals of the Minister of Education’s Debate Challenge 2025.
The event, held at the CedarBridge Academy cafetorium, was the culmination of a series of debates and training sessions involving 34 student debaters from across the island.
The grand finals challenged those in the 10 to 11 age group to debate the motion: “This House would ban social media”.
Those in the 12 to 14 age group, meanwhile, tackled the motion: “This House believes that major tourist destinations should significantly limit the number of tourists that can visit”.
Russian Thompson, Connor Faries and Xela Hall were named champions in the younger age bracket; while Nylah Matthews, Rudy Puhekker and Etana Holdipp-Lynch claimed top honours in the elder bracket.
At the end of the competition, Russian Thompson was named overall winner in the 10 to 11 age category and Annabelle Nelson won the title of overall winner in the 12 to 14 age category.
Gladstone Thompson, a debate leader and coach, said: “I am so proud of our students and how they demonstrated their ability to engage in meaningful, well-researched discussions.
“The level of research, critical thinking and articulate argumentation displayed by the participants left the audience and adjudicators in awe.
“The future of Bermuda is undoubtedly in capable hands.”
Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, said that the quality of debate was extraordinary.
“We have been in the presence of young minds who have challenged, inspired and electrified us with their eloquence, conviction and confidence in articulating their points,” she said.
“This is not just an ordinary debate tournament. It is an historic and unforgettable moment that will be etched in the memories of all who have witnessed these talented students.”
