Young people get in the groove for Stem Saturdays

A science and technology weekend workshop for children had a successful inaugural event, its organisers said.

More than 20 young people met at CedarBridge Academy’s Creation Station for the first session in the Stem Saturdays series.

The workshop, hosted by Dibia Dream BDA, was an opportunity for the group to learn about sound waves, while they built circuits and designed their own Bluetooth speakers.

Brandon Okpalobi, the founder of Dibia Dream BDA, said that watching the pupils’ engagement with their lessons was “nothing short of inspiring”.

He added: “They weren’t just learning about science — they were living it.”

Stem Saturdays is an extension of Dibia Dream BDA’s after-school programmes, which run across seven primary schools.

A spokesman for the group said that the weekend series was intended to help create an additional “Stem pipeline” for children to become interested in the field.

Mr Okpalobi explained: “Our goal is to make Stem accessible, exciting and empowering for all youth.

“Stem Saturdays are helping us amplify that mission — literally and figuratively.”

On top of the science and technology lessons, children learnt more about circuitry, created xylophones and designed their own speaker covers.

The young engineers left with their own speakers and came up with DJ names to match their new equipment.

Planning is under way for the next Stem Saturdays event.
