Pandemic dance craze co-opted for MarketPlace appeal

A hit song that inspired a global viral dance challenge over the pandemic has been adopted by a supermarket chain as it launched a charity drive.

MarketPlace celebrated the hard work of its “retail warriors” with a video dance challenge featuring Jerusalema by Master KG of South Africa.

Seth Stutzman, the president of The MarketPlace, said the video release was a tribute to staff as shoppers were asked to round up the total cost of their shopping this month for a good cause.

Clarien Bank will match the funds raised to help the Salvation Army and the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Both charities are supporting the thousands hard-hit by the economic impact of Covid-19.

Funds raised through in-store transactions will be split between the charities until September 30.

Major Robert Kerr, the Salvation Army divisional commander, said shoppers should “think of those who cannot afford to do the same and give in this very convenient manner”.

Karen Leseur, president of the St Vincent de Paul Society, added the cash would assist in its “outreach to the many people in need throughout the island”.

Michael DeCouto, Clarien’s chief digital and marketing officer, said the bank had just set up a banking relationship with the chain.

He added: “We are pleased to be able to support them as a vital service provider in our community with this charitable promotion.”
