Founders bow out of Heroes Weekend carnival events
The organisers of the Bermuda Carnival yesterday announced they will not hold events over the Bermuda Heroes Weekend.
But carnival shows are still expected to go ahead over the June holiday weekend, although run by another organisation.
A BHW Ltd spokesman said: “The chapter of Bermuda Carnival they began in 2015 is now closed.”
BHW, run by Jason “D’General” Sukdeo, highlighted the history of the event, which ran for five years before the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events.
The spokesman said: “After five years of 5 Star Fridays, which featured global Soca superstars, J’Ouvert, that included a Guinness world record, Pan in the Park for families and steel pan lovers, street parades of unfettered joy, jewels and feathers, along with everyone’s beloved raft-up, the BHW Ltd team stands proud that they stayed authentic to the ideals they always envisioned for Bermuda’s Carnival.”
But he added: “As we all know and have lived through of late, life and circumstances can and do evolve.
“Which inevitably means that change must occur and, for the team, a necessary but difficult decision had to be made.”
But the organisation hinted that it may return to the party business in the future and appealed to people to keep an eye on social media.
The spokesman said: “Love never truly ends and it is only after the finale and through the ashes that a phoenix can reach forward to rise and soar again.”
The announcement comes a month the Bermuda Mas Band Association said it would organise a Revel de Road event over the Bermuda Heroes Weekend with Party People Entertainment, Nova Mas International and Code Red Bda.
Revel de Road announcement also signalled an end to BMBA’s participation in BHW Ltd Bermuda Heroes Weekend events, including the BHW Band Launch and the BHW Parade of Bands.
A BMBA spokesman said at the time: "We thank the BHW Ltd committee for all their efforts and wish them well with their events.“
He added: "The bands that make up the BMBA are looking forward to creating a new and refreshing experience that highlights Bermudian talent, culture and artists, designers and people.“
