Revellers invited to Cup Match extravaganza in St George
Revellers from across the island are being invited to St George to "experience the true sense of community“ during its Cup Match celebration on Friday.
The Corporation of St George is hosting the Cup Match Extravaganza – the first fully open event in the Olde Towne since the pandemic began.
There will be a host of entertainers on stage including St George’s dance group the Dancerettes, the Bermuda Jump Rope Federation, United Dance Productions and H & H Gombeys.
George Dowling III, the Mayor of St George, said: "The Cup Match Extravaganza is part of the Corporation of St George’s Signature Event series which is funded by the Unesco World Heritage and Levy Fund.
“Our Cup Match event is a good example of why our town holds the Unesco World Heritage Site designation – not only do we care for the town’s landmarks, but we also support our cultural legacy through investment and representation.
“We must be reminded that St George's and Somerset clubs have been the stewards of a cultural touchstone for more than a century.
“Through world wars, segregation, recession and even a global pandemic, the clubs have helped remind Bermuda what is important to its people.”
Candy-Lee Foggo, town manager at the Corporation of St George, added: "Our town is unique in that while we are hosting the event, our area restaurants are open to serve you, plus local vendors will also be on hand for additional ease and convenience. The close proximity of dining, bars, retail stores, and parks makes visiting the town a convenience.
“The added benefit to the evening is that the cruise ship Insignia will also be in port at Penno’s Wharf. This will provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our culture and hospitality to our visitors."
The Cup Match Extravaganza takes place in St George’s on Friday, July 15 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Entry is free and parking is available in the Market Wharf and Tiger Bay car parks. A bus service will be available until 10.45pm for transfer to Dockyard.
