Exhibition of artist’s paintings of rustic Bermuda opens today

An artist’s rendition of the rustic Bermuda he knew growing up will be on display from today.

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda announced the opening of The Place We Know, a collection of paintings by Bruce Stuart done during the 1980s and 1990s.

Mr Stuart, who has been living in Mexico since 2006, said that working with Masterworks had been “a catalyst for much of my art education”.

He added: “I am very thankful for their tutelage and support. My heart has been behind them and is so proud of all they have accomplished in enriching and preserving our little island’s history.”

The Place We Know will feature natural landscapes and old Bermudian houses.

Mr Stuart said that much of his art was inspired by his grandmother’s backyard, which pushed his work to capture the nostalgia of his childhood.

He added that he wanted to reflect the rustic nature of Bermudian architecture that made it unique.

Mr Stuart explained: “Nobody would want to paint derelict buildings, but pink cottages, flowers and pretty beaches for the tourist market.

“Being a young painter and looking at my home with different eyes, after returning from college, I wanted to paint the real Bermuda with flaking paint, cracks in the wall and a shark-oil thermometer on the wall. The things that make us uniquely Bermudian.”

Masterworks will host an opening reception from 5.30pm to 7pm today. Members of the public are encouraged to view the art show.

The exhibition will be open until September 6.
