A Bermudian jazz musician who has amassed 9.1 million TikTok followers for his quirky, vintage cooking videos has been featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Dylan Hollis, 27, who lives between Bermuda and Wyoming, appeared on the multi Emmy-Award winning daytime show on Wednesday with Jay Leno, American TV host, comedian and writer, and Ayo Edebiri, American comedian, writer, actress and producer.

Mr Hollis was contacted by the show’s producers back in August and jumped at the opportunity to appear on TV – a first for him despite his internet stardom.

They, along with Ms Clarkson, an American singer and talk show host, helped him bake one of the many bizarre, Depression-era inspired recipes he has become famous for – pork cake.

Mr Hollis, a former Warwick Academy student from St George’s who began posting to the video-sharing platform in April 2020, said he was “star-struck and surprised” at the offer. He said: “I jumped on the opportunity immediately. I was honoured.

“The travel was a whirlwind – being on the show and in Hollywood was very foreign to me – the make-up, the wardrobe, the etiquette and all the Covid restrictions. I was comfortable and enjoyed myself being given the ability to speak to people and mention Bermuda.”

Asked how he is coping with all the fame, Mr Hollis, who had originally planned to be a musician and music teacher, added: “It’s not about me but the old recipes and wackiness of the discovery of yesteryear.

“That’s how I ground myself. It is very wild and nothing prepares you for that – nobody tells you what to do with 9.1 million people behind you. I haven’t a clue what’s going on.

“For my parents there is a great degree of pride and they are happy for me to grow into a career – well, it’s analogous to a career. They knew I always wanted to be an entertainer.”

On the show, Kelly Clarkson introduced Mr Hollis as a TikTok star with 7 million viewers – which is where the number stood when they contacted him in August – who has “a very unique hook”.

She said: “He started out baking his way through cookbooks from the Great Depression now he’s tackling decades as far back as the 1860s.”

After showing a clip from a video he produced baking a chocolate beet cake, Ms Clarkson welcomed him on screen saying: “you are hilarious”.

Asked how he got into it, Mr Hollis told her: “I am not a chef … I’m a jazz musician and I love big band jazz, I play jazz from the Forties and Fifties. I’ve been a lover of yesteryear for quite some time.”

He said the first thing he did when he moved from Bermuda to the States was buy a vintage Cadillac. He likes to collect old cookbooks and had time during the Covid-19 pandemic to try out some of the recipes.

The dessert-style pork cake he demonstrated on air included a concoction of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, flour, molasses, eggs, raisins, dates and pork meat.

Warwick Academy paid tribute to their former student with a post reading: “Very exciting news that we now can tell. So, so incredibly proud of this amazing young man. Those of you who have seen alumnus Dylan Hollis on TikTok with his moo juice and eggies … and his millions of followers, can see him tomorrow on NBC at 4pm on The Kelly Clarkson Show being interviewed about his huge following.

“Dylan always had a huge musical talent. He was one of very few who could play our large school organ and man oh man could he play jazz on the piano. A much loved part of our student body to a huge TikTok star … so thrilled for you Dylan. We all need to tape or watch Kelly Clarkson show tomorrow!”

The Kelly Clarkson Show, ranks among the top 10 daytime programmes in total viewers and drew an average daily audience of 1.3 million viewers for the 2021-22 season.
