Masterworks to stage Alfred Birdsey retrospective

An early watercolour by the prolific Alfred Birdsey, whose career ran from the 1930s to the 1990s. A retrospective of his career, entitled Birdsey: Stories and Sentiments, will take visitors through the artist’s career from the 1930s through the 1990s at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

A retrospective highlighting the career of one of Bermuda’s top and most prolific 20th-century artists opens next month at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

The exhibition of prints and paintings by Alfred Birdsey, an English-born artist who died in 1996, opens on November 14 at the Paget museum’s Butterfield Gallery.

Oils, watercolours and lithographs of Mr Birdsey’s works were gleaned from collections across the island.

The collection was assembled by the Masterworks guest curator Carole Reed, who said she had noticed the artist’s work when she arrived on the island as a digital nomad in 2020.

She added: “I later became intrigued by the inclusion of Birdsey's work in almost every home I visited and enjoyed asking about how they came to own the works, and 100 per cent of the time there was always the loveliest story attached to how the painting was collected.”

The retrospective, entitled Birdsey: Stories and Sentiments, will take visitors through the artist’s career from the 1930s through the 1990s.

Masterworks is open from Monday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
