Surprise for Bermudian news anchor as colleagues don shorts
Viewers of NBC10 Boston this week heard about Bermuda Day traditions while the Bermudian news anchor was surprised by colleagues who wore shorts to mark the occasion.
Glenn Jones, a journalist and household name on the East Coast of the United States through his role on the station, highlighted May 24 during a broadcast yesterday.
He also posted a photograph on Twitter that showed television crew who turned up to work in shorts on to accompany his own choice of clothing that day.
Mr Jones wrote: “Today’s Bermuda Day (the traditional date anyway).
“My colleagues knew I’d be wearing Bermuda shorts; it’s where I’m from.
“So they schemed in secret to come to work in shorts so I wouldn’t be marking the occasion alone.
“Now that’s teamwork! Thanks guys. Warmed my heart.”
He later shared a clip from a news broadcast that included footage from previous Bermuda Day events such as a half-marathon derby and parade.
Mr Jones, who joined NBC10 Boston in 2021, told viewers: “If you’ve been watching this show carefully, you’ve likely noticed I’m wearing shorts.
“Well, that’s not only because it’s a warm day. I’m from Bermuda originally and today is Bermuda Day.
“It’s a cultural holiday on the island.
“Bermudians mark the day with a half-marathon, a parade and typically it’s the year’s first day for hitting a pink sand beach and taking a dip in the ocean.
“For those of us no longer living on the island, throwing on our Bermuda shorts is one way to keep the culture alive.”
He added: “I thought maybe I would surprise people by coming to work this way today but they surprised me.”
In another clip, Mr Jones said his choice of outfit was made to “splash a little bit of Bermuda culture” on the day.
He added: “This is what I did not expect: I walked into work and I saw so many of my co-workers wearing shorts so that I would not be the only one marking the occasion in this way.
“So thanks very much to all of my colleagues. They made me feel right at home.”
Mr Jones then presented Bermuda shorts to show co-hosts Pete Bouchard and Priscilla Casper.
