Author to read from his book on 1930s bathysphere adventurer
Accounts of an adventurer’s descents into the depths of the oceans chronicled in a new book will be read by the author in Bermuda on World Oceans Day.
Brad Fox, a New York author, will narrate excerpts from The Bathyshere Book: Effects of the Luminous Depths, which documents the work of deep-see explorer William Beebe in Bermuda during the 1930s.
The event is being co-hosted by the Bermuda Zoological Society and the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo on Thursday evening.
The promotional flyer says: “Imagine climbing into a four and half foot metal sphere and descending into the crushing ocean depths one-half-mile down off Nonsuch Island, Bermuda to a new world never before explored. A world where a myriad of weird and wonderful creatures dance in front of the tiny quartz windows creating their own light displays while enveloped in perpetual darkness.
“This is the 1930s world of Dr William Beebe … explorer, scientist, playboy and larger-than-life personality.”
The book was described by W M Akers in a review in The New York Times Book as “Hypnotic … Beautifully written and beautifully made."
Mr Fox will also host a book signing at the event and will be on hand to talk to guests who can explore BAMZ’s new exhibition highlighting Beebe’s work in Bermuda.
The event takes place on June 8 from 5.30pm to 7pm.
Spaces are limited and available to BZS or Masterworks members. Places can be reserved by e-mailing info@bzs.bm with the subject line “Bathysphere Book”.
