Five Bermudians have been highlighted by the Department of Culture for the 2023 Bermuda Arts Council Awards.

The Council, founded in 1969, promotes awareness of the value of the arts and their continued development in Bermuda.

The author and film-maker Rosheena Beek, honoured posthumously, and Patricia Pogson-Nesbitt, an author and playwright, both received a Lifetime Achievement Award for creating a significant body of original work that is representative of the Bermudian spirit.

St Clair “Brinky” Tucker, a founder of the St David’s Islanders and Native Community, and Rick Spurling, a leading member of the St David’s Island Historical Society, were given the Founder Award for pioneers of the arts who have mentored others.

Clement Talbot, a prominent benefactor of the arts in Bermuda, received the Patron Award to show the community’s appreciation.

The former BAC head Jennifer Phillips, who recently stepped down as chairwoman, was presented with a bowl carved from Bermuda cedar for her ten years of service.

The ceremony was held on May 20 at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall in Hamilton.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, said: “These worthy Bermudians have inspired so many of us with their creative engagement and their artistic passion, and they should be applauded for their achievement.”

Mr Darrell added that the ministry would provide enduring support for the council, “as they shine a spotlight on the talent, hard work, and dedication of these and other deserving Bermudians”.
