Bermudian actress will star in Suffs musical
Bermudian actress Tsilala Brock will be among the cast of Suffs, a musical inspired by the women’s movement and co-produced by Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai.
She is making her official Broadway debut playing Dudley Malone in the production, which is set in 1913 and focuses on the suffragists’ pursuit of the right to vote.
It will run at the Music Box Theatre in New York this spring
Ms Brock studied at Bermuda’s United Dance Productions with Marcelle Clemons, and was in Troika productions including Beauty and the Beast and The Colour Purple’s second run.
Her theatre credits also include a US national tour of The Book of Mormon.
The lead producers of Suffs are Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman, with Ms Clinton, a former US Secretary of State, and Ms Yousafzai, a girls’ education campaigner, as co-producers.
A statement to the press said that Ms Brock’s real-life character in the musical is Mr Malone, the Assistant Secretary of State to US President Woodrow Wilson, who publicly resigned from office to persuade Wilson to shift his stance on women's suffrage.
It added: “He became a lawyer for the women's movement and eventually found a partnership with suffragist Doris Stevens along with a new-found sense of purpose.”
Shaina Taub, who wrote the book, music and lyrics for Suffs, will take the role of Alice Paul.
Rubenstein, the show’s press representative, said the composer is the second woman in history to write all three for a Broadway musical.
Ms Taub is an Obie Award-winning and Emmy award-nominated songwriter signed to Atlantic Records.
The original musical will also feature Tony Award-winner, Nikki M. James who starred in The Book of Mormon.
Its opening night is scheduled for April 18.
