Free film at National Library
In recognition of Black History Month, the US Consulate General and the Bermuda National Library will offer a free film screening of Just Mercy tomorrow night.
The film is based on Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, a memoir published ten years ago.
Mr Stevenson is an American attorney who created the Equal Justice Initiative. According to the EJI, the non-profit organisation provides legal representation to those who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons.
Mr Stevenson’s memoir examines one of its clients, Walter McMillian, who was wrongfully convicted of murder.
In the film, Michael B. Jordan takes on the role of Stevenson, who travels to Alabama to defend those who are either wrongfully condemned or unable to afford proper legal representation. Just Mercy follows Stevenson as he assists McMillian, played by Jamie Foxx, on his quest for justice.
Karen Grissette, the US Consul General said: “Just Mercy is a powerful, true story centred around empathy, equity, hope and resilience. Both the film and the New York Times bestseller by Bryan Stevenson have received numerous, prestigious awards, and more importantly, have helped people better understand racial justice issues within the judicial system. I am proud to partner again with the Bermuda National Library to host this special movie screening in honour of Black History Month.”
A staunch human rights activist, Mr Stevenson has received numerous awards, including the 2023 National Humanities Medal presented by President Joe Biden.
There is limited space for the screening, and those interested in attending are encouraged to register directly with the library.
The show will take place on February 7 at 6pm at the National Library on Queen Street.
