Artists to speak on process that led to notable works
The National Museum of Bermuda will host artistic discussions throughout October to celebrate local talent.
Three Artist Talks will be held throughout the month and see artists breaking down the creative processes behind some of their largest pieces.
It is a part of Bermuda Art Month, hosted by the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
Elena Strong, the executive director of the NMB, said: “We hope that visitors and locals alike join us for these opportunities to meet a few of our talented local artists whose work is on display at NMB.
“This is a rare opportunity to hear the artist’s and curator’s perspective, learn more about the exhibits’ context and have a conversation.”
She added: “Art is a powerful entry point to engage with Bermuda’s past and heritage.
“We look forward to seeing you at NMB.”
Lisa Howie will lead attendees on a tour of her exhibit Alternative Voices: A Perspective on Contemporary Art from the Azores next Thursday at 10am.
The exhibit, which she co-created, features three Azorean artists who incorporate elements of nature into their art and will discuss the themes of nostalgia, renewal and rebirth.
It is also the NMB’s way of commemorating the 175th anniversary of the first Portuguese immigrants to reach Bermuda.
Jayde Gibbons will be on-site to discuss the artistic process behind her piece FAMILY (FAM, I Love You), which features intimate and candid photographs from five Bermudian funerals.
The photographs, which were featured in the NMB’s Bermuda Family Scrapbook project, were used to detail the endurance of family relationships in the face of death and mourning.
The talk will take place on October 5 at 11.
Graham Foster will break down the inspiration, technique and stories that went into his Hall of History mural that spans 1,000ft of wall at the Commissioner’s House in Dockyard.
The mural details 500 years of Bermuda’s human history and is known for its scale, vibrancy and humour.
Mr Foster will give his talk on October 27 at 1pm.
The Artist Talks are free with admission to the NMB. It’s $18 for adult admissions, $15 for seniors and access is free to all NMB members and children under 16.
The museum is open every day except Christmas from 9.30am to 5pm, with the last admission at 4pm.
