A Bermudian actress and singer living in England has played a major role in a new film.

Tauria Raynor said that she channelled her inner mob boss for her role in the thriller, Mother Mafia.

Ms Raynor added: “I’ve gotten a lot of positive comments about it.

“I don’t know if I’d expect it to be submitted to the Oscars – it was a pretty small production – but I really enjoyed it.”

Mother Mafia, which was released on Amazon and Tubi in June, follows the story of a homeless woman who squats in an old house, only to be caught in a gang war between two violent groups.

Ms Raynor plays Cordelia, the Amazon-like leader of the all-female Sisters of the Nile gang.

She described her character as being “sweet and kind” but an overall “authoritative figure”.

Ms Raynor added: “No one can touch her and she’s surrounded by security.

“She can fight, but she doesn’t have to.”

Ms Raynor said that her character was given added depth by having given up her infant daughter when she was much younger.

She added that these maternal instincts came into play with her character protecting the protagonist, a woman named Simone – all at the expense of her gang’s confidence in her ruthless reputation.

Ms Raynor said: “Throughout the movie, she’s discovered to not be as authentic as people thought she was.”

Ms Raynor said that the two gangs, and the film as a whole, had a Shakespearean and “medieval” feeling.

She said that these gangs had been at war for centuries and that many of the traditions were still kept up, such as the use of swords in place of guns.

Ms Raynor said that the role was much more physical than her other jobs, both in terms of her character’s aggressiveness and the physical demands.

She enjoyed the nice change of pace.

Ms Raynor has enjoyed acting roles in the past, which were primarily focused on theatre work.

She is involved in another film, Diamondz R 4Eva, which is in post-production.

She is also writing a sitcom under the working title Love London, which she described as a slice-of-life comedy about young adults looking for love in the title city.
