Funds from circus will benefit two programmes
Bermudians will perform with acts from around the world in a new circus this week.
Rick Richardson, the Bermuda liaison for Circus International, said island aerialists and Gombeys would feature in the shows from November 22 to 24.
The young aerialists, including teenager Satinka Smith, will perform with Bermudian Kallie Marcus, who wowed spectators in the Super American Circus last year.
Mr Richardson said: “These youngsters, as our audiences will see, are highly accomplished and the opportunity [to perform] would not happen if the circus was not coming here.”
Other acts in the animal-free circus include clown Coco Kramer, aerialist Disa Cameol and rope master Enrique Escadeja.
Ticket sales from the event will benefit the Gina Spence Programme and the Bermuda Technical Institute Association’s adopt-a-school initiative, which both received funds from last year’s circus.
Gina Spence-Virgil, founder of the Gina Spence Programme, explained: “We are really excited that our charity has been chosen again to receive donations from this amazing event.
“One of the programmes that we’re focusing on is our Champions Programme, which helps children affected by gun violence, and the funds from this specific donation will provide the support and counselling that our children and parents need.
“Last year, we were able to partner with the Ministry of Education and give tickets to the schools. We hope to do the same this year.”
Mr Richardson said the circus would raise thousands of dollars for each programme.
He explained: “[Circus cofounder] Montana DeBor stressed that this is not something that we want to make a lot of money doing, we want to give back.
“[The circus] is a philanthropic venture outside what is used to cover costs.”
The shows will be held in the Shed in Dockyard at 4.30pm and 7.30pm on Friday, with three performances on both Saturday and Sunday.
• Tickets range from $40 for children aged 3 to 12 to $150 for VIPs and can be purchased at circusinternationalbda.com, ptix.bmor, if available, at the door before each show
