Skyport Christmas carol contest returns
Senior care homes have been invited to the airport to hear schoolchildren serenade guests with Christmas carols.
The second Great Bermuda Carol-Off promises $15,000 in prizes for music programmes to schools that offer the best performances.
This year will introduce the Winner’s Concert, which takes place a week after the competition.
Nikki Fagan, head of brand development and communications at Skyport, said: “We are excited to be hosting the Great Bermuda Carol-Off again at LF Wade International Airport.
“Skyport is committed to supporting youth in science, arts, sports and education, and we believe this event supports that mission in the spirit of the season.
“So much of what we love about the holidays is wrapped up in travel and music, and we look forward to bringing them together with the carol-off and winners concert in December.”
The three-day competition will gather primary and secondary schools by the airport’s Christmas tree as they sing to travellers, Skyport staff and residents in 15-minute intervals.
More than 700 pupils from 22 schools are expected to take part.
Titles for Best Primary School Choir and Best Secondary School Choir will come with $5,000 prizes, with runners-up receiving $2,000 and the People’s Choice awardees getting $1,200.
Performances throughout the concert will be judged by a panel of three, led by Dale Butler.
Singers will be assessed based on their harmonies, skill, creativity, professionalism and Christmas spirit.
Skyport will provide transportation for all participating schools and senior homes.
Homes that are interested should e-mail communications@skyport.bm to arrange seating.
The event will be held on December 2, 4 and 5, with the winners concert taking place on December 12 from 7pm to 8.30pm.
Although the events are free, organisers encouraged people who wish to attend to reserve seats through Ptix.
