The Green family is to take on the title sponsorship of the Bermuda National Gallery’s biennial exhibition.

Its support will begin with the 2026 edition of the Bermuda Biennial and build on “a long history of collaboration” between the family and the gallery, the BNG said.

The gallery added that the relationship started when several artworks were loaned by the Greens for the BNG’s first exhibition in 1992.

It said: “A selection of portraits by Andy Warhol from the Green collection will open at the gallery in May, marking the fourth large-scale exhibition to feature works from the family’s private collection.”

Jennifer Phillips, the BNG’s executive director, added: “The Bermuda Biennial has consistently pushed both the submitting artists as well as BNG as an institution to challenge the boundaries of possibility.

“We are immensely grateful to Bacardi Limited, whose sustained sponsorship since 1998 has solidified the important place the Biennial holds in our island’s community.

“Looking ahead, we could not be more appreciative of the Green family’s continued support of BNG and the wider artistic community through this exciting new partnership.”

Alexander and Andrew Green added: “We are proud to continue our partnership with the BNG in sponsoring their marquee event for Bermudian artists.

“Bermuda continues to produce exciting artists and the biennial provides an opportunity for Bermuda’s best to showcase their work.”

The sponsorship includes free bus transportation to the gallery for schools around the island, courtesy of the Greens’ Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

The initiative, which has been running for several years, transported more than 1,250 students in 2024 and continues through to the end of spring.

The BNG’s flagship exhibition features works selected by a rotating cast of overseas jurors and is recognised by the International Biennial Association. It enables local artists to have their work seen by art professionals.

The first Bermuda Biennial was held in 1994, with the jury led by Janet Fish, a contemporary American artist who grew up in Bermuda.

Since then, jurors have come from organisations across the Caribbean, including the National Gallery of Jamaica and the National Gallery of the Bahamas, alongside a range of US institutions such as the Chicago Art Institute, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian.

For the 2024 Bermuda Biennial, artist Ebony Patterson, who held her first museum solo show at the gallery in 2012, returned to the BNG over a decade later in the role of biennial juror.

She was joined by Helen Toomer, an art fair organiser.

The resulting exhibition, Places, Presence and Poetics, brought together 32 artworks by 25 artists.

The 2024 Bermuda Biennial closes on Saturday, January 4.
