BHS head of creative arts to bow out after Mary Poppins
An upcoming musical by the Bermuda High School will take the audience to early 20th-century London.
A spokeswoman said Mary Poppins will be the final production, with Jane Hammond Thorpe, head of creative arts at the school, at the helm.
Ms Thorpe, a BHS alumna, directed more than 40 shows at the school — including 23 musicals and seven abridged Shakespeare plays — since 1999.
She said: “Directing and producing a show can sometimes be overwhelming, but so many people step up to help, it is always a team effort.”
Ms Thorpe believes students, who she said have been the highlight of her career, learn to take risks on stage and develop leadership skills behind the scenes.
She added: “Theatre has been my happy place; I love the creative freedom, the collaborative spirit and the sheer fun that the journey brings from beginning to end.
“I have always wanted to allow others to learn about and be exposed to it … watching them create something together is truly incredible.”
Ms Thorpe said Mary Poppins, an adaptation of the 1964 film, was “a big show and will appeal to all members of our school community”.
Carol Swainson, the head of school, added: “We are so proud of the work that Ms Thorpe has done with her students on and off the stage.
“She has inspired and mentored scores of students who return to visit her regularly.
“Mary Poppins will be a tremendous production.”
