Belco plans open to public scrutiny
Plans for a proposed redevelopment of Belco’s central plant have been made available for the public for review.Last year, Belco filed an application with the Planning Department for a phased redevelopment, including the construction of a new North Station, to be located between Cemetery Road and St John’s Road. The new site will initially feature several 18MW diesel engines along with a 65m (213ft) smoke stack, storage tanks and external radiators.Once the new facilities are in place, Belco plans to decommission its oldest power station, located to the north of the Belco offices.Belco has said that the new site needs to be in place by 2013 in order to guarantee reliable power delivery throughout the Island as several of the plant’s generators are already working beyond their normal service life. And in order to meet that deadline, the company must issue a Request for Proposal and sign contracts for new equipment this year.According to the company’s long-term plan, new diesel generators will be built within the site’s existing footprint as older generators are decommissioned. While Belco believes that fossil fuels will continue to make up the backbone of the Island’s electricity system, it has set a goal of having 20 percent of Bermuda’s energy coming from renewable sources by 2020.The company believes that Bermuda could see the construction of a large-scale solar farm by 2015, and an offshore wind farm by 2018.The application for the new development is available for the public to during normal business hours at the Department of Planning offices.lUseful websites: www.belco.bm, www.planning.gov.bm.
