More than 100 sign online petition against resort’s SDO
An online petition aimed at stopping an SDO for the Rosewood Tucker’s Point resort has garnered more than 100 signatures in five days. The petition, which appeared online on February 17, calls the Tucker’s Point land ecologically and culturally sensitive. The petition’s publisher, calling herself Sarah, said she started the petition after reading comments about the special development order on an online article.“The general sentiment seemed to be completely opposed to the idea, and it seemed that a petition would be the obvious place to collect those voiced of disapproval and hopefully achieve maximum impact as the SDO is debated,” she said.If approved, the SDO could allow the resort to build additional residences on the land, which includes areas of nature conserve, woodland conserve and coastal conserve destinations, in addition to several caves. However, Environment Minister Walter Roban has said stringent conditions have been put in place to protect the land, and that the plans would still need to pass through the Department of Planning for final approval. While, as of press time, the petition has 118 signatures, Sarah said she hopes that number doubles before the House of Assembly debates the SDO.“It would be nice to double that, but I think the message is clear regardless. I’m certain that there are many more people that are opposed to the possible granting of the SDO.“My original intent was never to have x number of signatures by x specific time. I wanted to show that there was a significant number of people who strongly disagreed with the idea.“Of course, the more signatures we have by the time it reaches the House, the better.“I think the public’s feelings on it are clear regardless. Hopefully, that will be acknowledged and the SDO refused.”lUseful websites: www.gopetition.com/petition/43111.html, www.gov.bm, www.tuckerspoint.com.
