Top civil servant to speak at London conference on the ocean

Director of Environmental Protection Dr Fred Ming will represent Bermuda next week in London as part of a campaign to protect the ocean.On May 19, Dr Ming is scheduled to take part in Project Ocean, spearheaded by London-based retailer Selfridges and the Zoological Society of London.The campaign which is aimed at raising awareness of overfishing, sustainability and marine protection. Dr Ming will take part in one of a series of ‘Ocean Talks’ entitles “Fencing Off the Oceans,” relating to the issue of Marine Protected Areas.Last year, the Government announced that it had taken a leadership role in the Sargasso Sea Alliance, an international partnership that hopes to bring further protection to the Sargasso Sea.Dr Ming said that his involvement in the presentation will allow Bermuda to show the world that it is serious about protecting the marine environment.“This is potentially a very positive development for Bermuda’s long term future as well as the future of the Sargasso Sea,” he said.“The challenge of protecting such a vast expanse of ocean is breathtaking, but we are fortunate to have the Pew Environment Group, a major independent environmental non-profit organisation, offering to work with the Bermuda Government to establish a large marine reserve somewhere within our exclusive economic zone.”Useful websites: www.globaloceanlegacy.org/bermuda, www.selfridges.com.
