Man rescues longtail trapped in kite string
An injured longtail was taken to the Aquarium this weekend after it was caught up in kite string on South Shore.Karen Border, secretary of the Bermuda Audubon Society said that Terry Williams, a security guard at Surfside, saw the bird struggling near the complex on Saturday. He contacted Alistair Border of the Audubon Society, who climbed down the cliff and cut the string to rescue the bird.“The kite string was draped all over the cliffs and had become tightly wrapped around one of the Longtail’s wings,” Ms Border said. “It shows how dangerous abandoned kite string can be for birds, especially larger birds such as longtails, herons and owls. This poor longtail was probably trying to fly into its cliff burrow when it became entangled.“We urge kite flyers to make every effort, within the bounds of safety, to retrieve and remove string if their kite crashes.”The longtail, or white-tailed tropicbird, is a common sight during the summer in Bermuda, nesting in rocky cliffs. The bird is expected to make a full recovery, and should be released back into the wild soon.
