Ten-storey apartment block at laundromat site rejected
A proposed ten-storey apartment building on Serpentine Road has been turned down by the City of Hamilton.Although the decision ultimately lies with Planning, the City’s reasons for declining the project will be taken into consideration.Common councillor Walter Cross had to excuse himself from yesterday’s discussion, as he is the owner of the site at 74 Serpentine Road, where the Quickie Lickie laundromat currently stands.Hamilton Deputy Mayor Glen Smith cited a number of problems noted by the City’s development committee in examining the proposal. The 21-unit block, with retail and underground parking, was initially proposed to Planning with a call for “quick refusal”, so that it could go before the Minister of the Environment. The City development committee cited “serious issues with access arrangements off Serpentine Road”, plus parking, trash storage and servicing, sidewalk impact, and the plan’s lack of public art.Noting the building’s height, Mayor Charles Gosling said: “Currently, we have no choice but to decline it, because it is not in keeping with the Hamilton Plan.”
