Park Hyatt resort will be a ‘community’
The proposed Park Hyatt resort is intended to create a community “reminiscent of the Town of St George’s”, according to developers. The nearly 40 buildings that make up the resort are designed to fit in with the existing East End community, a Department of Planning application states.“The scope and breadth of the design is intended to allow the guests of the Park Hyatt Bermuda to most completely experience the characteristics and opportunities offered by the site and the culture of Bermuda, “ the documents read. “No building or wall is higher than three storeys and building footprints will be kept small.”The resort’s intended hilltop site was home to Club Med. That hotel closed its doors in 1988; the property slowly fell into disrepair. In April 2008 Park Hyatt was officially announced as the future managers of the site.Construction on the new hotel was initially promised to begin in 2009, with an opening date in spring of this year. The building was demolished in a controlled implosion that August. Developer Carl Bazarian announced that the resort would “definitely” be built by 2012. A Planning application for the project was submitted to Planning last September.Former Premier and Tourism Minister Ewart Brown announced the following month, that full funding of the project was in place. A new application was submitted last week based on revised plans.Said Mayor of St George’s Kenneth Bascome: “I think that it’s welcome news, not just for St George’s but for the Island of Bermuda.”Shadow Tourism Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin was also pleased to have the project move forward. She said the resort could be a boon for the tourism industry and the Island’s employment situation, both of which she described as being in dire shape.“We are absolutely thrilled that the next step has been taken in the realisation of the Park Hyatt resort,” she said.“We hope that this is the first step in a project that will reach its ultimate conclusion at some point in time soon, so that Bermudians can benefit.”The new plans for the site are similar to those made viewable last year. Also proposed for the property is a 100-room hotel spread over eight buildings, with 122 residential units, a redesigned golf course, golf and fitness centre and a spa.Earlier designs placed the spa near historic Fort Albert. The new plans have it attached to the golf centre. Fort Albert is to remain as it currently is, with the exception of some possible repair work. The main hotel building is to be constructed near Fort Victoria, with the fort “restored, repaired and repurposed for public use, viewing and experience as the resort centre”.Also included in the plans are off-site staff housing, a utilities area with a reverse osmosis plant, and a sewage treatment facility which has sparked concerns from area residents.
