‘Queen of the East’ is put up for sale
Historic Hamilton home and former brothel “Queen of the East” on Crow Lane has been put up for sale.According to a commercial listing by Coldwell Banker, the building is priced at $1,795,000, and has potential for either residential or commercial use.The formerly protected building has been delisted, and has a demolition permit.Government paperwork described the house as an “outstanding example of an 18th century merchant’s house.”Built in the 1740s, the building has served over the years as a bakery, a laundry and a Soldiers and Sailors Club. It earned its name in the early 20th century when it became a brothel. In 1938, the building became the home of architect Bayfield Clarke and his wife, an interior designer, who renovated the building into “one of the showplaces of Bermuda.”However in 2007, Government removed the building’s Grade One historic building listing, sparking anger from conservationists who were concerned the building would be torn down for offices.A Government spokesman at the time said the decision to delist the building came following a request by the owner, who claimed they were unable to rent the property because of a lack of on-site parking.
