Environment Ministry to host forum on Island’s water supply
Bermuda’s water supply will be the hot topic at a public debate at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on Thursday. The Sustainable Development Roundtable is organising the event entitled ‘Bermuda’s Water Supply: How Sustainable Is It?’, from 6pm to 8pm, to discuss factors influencing the production, supply and availability of water, and vulnerabilities Bermuda needs to plan for.The Environment Ministry said in a statement: “The SDRT believes individuals, businesses and organisations must do their part in responsibly managing our water resources because it influences all of our lives.”Chairwoman Ianthia Wade Simmons said: “The emotional stress and economic impacts are often overlooked in our conversations on water.“These are just as important as the environmental considerations because even the most vulnerable populations deserve an adequate water supply.“The SDRT aims to highlight holistic challenges that need to be considered when the water supply for current and future generations is being discussed.”The event will feature a panel discussion and presentations from a cross-section of the water industry. Audience members will be able to ask questions.Ms Wade Simmons added: “This is a timely event as historically April and May are the driest months of the year and for the past six months our actual rainfall has been well below normal levels.”
